Lesson 15: Start writing your first draft

Okay friend, up to now was the easy part. You have brainstormed, you have planned, you have outlined, and have journaled your heart out. And for that, I am so proud of you. But now, NOW is the real work of putting pen to paper or keys to keyboard (whatever is your preference).

This won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. Some days you will think you are the best writer in the world or other days you will wonder why am I even doing this. That is okay, all the feelings are normal. Accept that they will come and let them go.

In the brilliant words of Cheryl strayed…

“Writing is hard for every last one of us… Coal mining is harder. Do you think miners stand around all day talking about how hard it is to mine for coal? They do not. They simply dig.Now that you have picked out your ideal page count, you can create your writing plan based off that. Be sure to consider your writing personality to. Are you someone that does well to write daily or having weekly or monthly writing retreats? Honor your personality and expectations realistically.”

As you begin writing, set everything in place:

Your who, what, why
Your writing ritual and space
Your table of contents and outline
Your writing tools
Your writing schedule
AND YOUR GUTS, brave one.

The next few lessons are on writing resistance, writing resources, tools for writing hard things, and a closing letter for when you finish. (Save that letter till the end). These other lessons, you are welcome to read through as needed, but don’t let them stop you from getting started.
