Lesson 16: Notes On Resistance
The resistance is real, but it is also a teacher...
Let me be the first to warn you, the resistance will be real. You will hit road blocks. You will be confronted by feelings and stories that rise up like resurrected ghosts. You will want to run away, hide, shut the whole project down. Please don’t my friend. This is about not abandoning your voice. This is about committing yourself to the story you feel called to tell.
See resistance as a teacher, an invitation to dive into your truth. You have been called for this moment. Your book is waiting for you.
No matter what your big writing goals are, remember the ultimate power of writing is the healing journey it takes you on in uncovering your voice and truth. When the writing gets tough, and it will, come back to this reason. Take it bit by bit, that is enough.
As Anne Lamott writes, "take it bird by bird." Write a single word, paragraph, and page at a time– before you know it, you will arrive at your first draft with a print book of your words held in your hands.
Writing is a deep dive. It calls us to brave our fear and show up before we're ready.
This Steven Pressfield quotes is one of my favorites! Tape this quote to your writing nook and read it everyday that you feel resistance biting. It has been a lifesaver for me more times than I can count. Don’t forget to add your “writing why” right next door to it as well.
“REMEMBER ONE RULE OF THUMB: THE MORE SCARED WE ARE OF A WORK OR CALLING, THE MORE SURE WE CAN BE THAT WE HAVE TO DO IT." – Steven Pressfield
Write on, write through, write to the other side. You got this.
